Planning your vacation route in advance will enable you to both get to your destination as soon as possible and to
take advantage of scenic attractions along the way. Be sure to get plenty of sleep before driving, and limit your driving
time to eight hours per day. To maintain energy and alertness, it is a good idea to pull into rest stops every two hours to
stretch your legs. Avoid, however, leaving children or pets in a locked car; temperatures can climb fast, even with the window
cracked.
Quick Vacation Checklist:
- driver's license
- vehicle registration
- auto insurance card
- motor club card
- duplicate keys
- hospital insurance card
- medical information
- names & addresses of next of kin

Once everyone is secure in the automobile and you're ready to get on the road, it is important to remember some basic safe
driving points:
Maintain a safe following distance (at least two seconds of travel time) between you and the car ahead of you. In rainy
weather, slow down when approaching a bridge or overpass to avoid skidding. Drive through deep puddles slowly to avoid soaking
your engine parts with water that sprays up inside. After you drive through a deep puddle, lightly pump your brake pedal to
create heat, which will dry out the brakes' friction surfaces. Never try to tend to a crying baby while driving; instead,
find a safe place to stop. Never remove a baby from a car seat for comforting while the car is moving. Pull over to the side
of the road. Never place a baby in a car equipped with a front passenger side air-bag.
Obeying the speed limit, buckling seat belts, and limiting alcoholic beverages whenever driving are the most important
steps that you can take to keep yourself and your family safe.
